This beautifully written book was shaped by three questions: How do I find a way to live a life I can love now? How do I help make it possible for those who will come after me to do the same? How do I re-collect the wisdom earned through my own and others challenges? I dont know anyone who would not benefit from exploring those questions, especially in the company of a master mentor, a true companion on the journey toward the human possibility. How Can I Never Lose Who I Really Am?I seem to get lost a lot. Its my sisters fault. At least thats what my mother says. When I was just three months old, my sister took me for a walk in a large black baby carriage, which she left on the yellow painted lines in the middle of Ditmus Avenue in Brooklyn. It took the police several hours to find me. Supposedly, I wasnt even crying at the time.I also seem to break bones a lot. Leg bones, arm bones, collarbones, funny bones: Ive broken them all. My sister says its because I was born a klutz. When I broke the bone in my right leg, she drew an ugly face on the cast. So it has taken a long time to climb the stairs to Grandmas today. I am carrying my favorite book, The Wizard of Oz, in a backpack so I can manage the crutches. The heroine, Dorothy, gets lost a lot, just like I do. I take the book under the kitchen table, where the red oilcloth cover hangs down and makes a tent I can hide under. Grandma comes in to check on the yeasting Sabbath bread, and I begin immediately to pelt her with the question that keep rising in my mind.Grandma, why do I keep getting lost all the time? How will I ever find the Promise if I keep losing my way?She pulls me up onto her bony lap, cast and all, and puts her warm hand on top of mine. The veins on the back pop out like little rivers. Her skin has brown spots and is thin as onion peel. She moves our hands around and around. Each time they trace a bigger and bigger circle in the air. Then I recognize the shape.I know what thats called, Grandma! I just learned about it in school. Its a spiral. Her eyes get crinkly in the corners. I call it the Wisdom Trail. She kisses the back of my neck where she says it tastes the sweetest, saying, In school, they teach you many things that youre supposed to master, like reading and arithmetic. I dont know anything about them, but I do know about things that are a mystery: bringing babies into the world and discovering the Promise in people.Ah, this is what I really want to hear about. Maybe the Wisdom Trail is like the Yellow Brick Road. Tell me about that, Grandma. Will it keep me from getting lost? She keeps our hands moving in a spiral, up, around, out. Well, lets talk about that. Youll live many moments, Ketzaleh. If you memorize them and the people that you love, theyll be planted on the Island that is deep within your heart. When your body dies, that Island goes with you.But Grandma, what if I rush and forget to memorize them. Its hard to memorize my multiplication tables. Moments? People? I dont know if I can do that. Ill get lost even more than I do now!Her eyes light up. Its not as hard as you think, my darling. Whats most important is not to rush. You see, there is One who lives on that Island who is always listening to your thoughts. Can you find that One now?I think to myself that I wont be able to find that One, but then I notice the one who is thinking that thought. I try not to bounce on my Grandmas knees because I might hurt her, but I jiggle excitedly. Yes, Grandma. Its easy. There has to be one who is listening to my thoughts, cause otherwise who would notice them?Just so, Ketzaleh. That is the One who lives on the Island of your Heart. It has always been there and will always be there. And the more moments you love, the more will be planted on that Island. If a person rushes around and doesnt notice any moments, their Island will be like a desert because nothing will take root. And when I die, will that Island and the One Who Knows go with me?Without hesitation, she strokes the hair out of my eyes and nods. You can learn to make the kind of choices that help you memorize your moments, Ketzaleh. You move through your moments making choices. Some will make you feel more alive, some will make you feel less. This is as it meant to be. Instead of marching ahead in a straight line, your life is meant to go like a spiral. Each time you make a choice that helps you love that moment, the spiral gets wider and wider and you get wiser and wiser.I like the idea of a spiral path instead of a straight line. I especially like that I cant get lost on it. But Im still confused. OK, I get that, but how do I love a moment? As she answers, she takes a pencil and draws a little heart around the ugly face on my cast. First you have to know how to make choices as you walk on the Wisdom Trail, Ketzaleh. You may choose to leap with one foot because it seems like it will be fun and it seems like it could grow the life in you. Lets call that your foot of risk. Then you may choose to feel safe and secure, so you root down right where you are with your other foot. You keep going back and forth: risk, safe, risk, safe, back and forth, back and forth. Understanding that helps you love your life. Read more
